Program Description

The Education Assistant program has been developed to comply with the rules and regulations as outlined by the Ministry of Education. It is designed specifically to address the responsibilities and challenges facing support staff in our schools. We place an emphasis on developing student skills in the areas of Special Education, Classroom Literacy and Behaviour Management. In addition, students complete a number of professional workshops designed to provide a well-rounded educational experience. The course is taught by highly respected, recently retired Ontario teachers, each of whom has taken responsibility for key areas of the curriculum.  Our students are able to make an immediate, positive impact in the schools and to meet the needs of children in today’s classrooms.

Course Outline
During classroom instruction emphasis is placed on the practical applications of special education, childhood literacy and behaviour management.  We study the importance and necessity of treating each child as an individual. Students learn the skills of effective communication and how to implement programs designed to meet the needs of the child. The E.A. program includes but is not limited to:

  • Crisis  Prevention Intervention (CPI)

Practical Internship Experience
Over 400 hours of practical experience will take place in local elementary and secondary schools, with Board approval and under the direction of the principals and teachers involved.

Admission Requirements
Grade 12 or equivalent, demonstrated English, communication and comprehension skills. Students must have the equivalent standing at the general level in English.

Student Evaluations and Requirements for Graduation
To receive your diploma from KLC you must fulfill all course requirements to the satisfaction of school administration. This includes successful course and work placement completion and tuition paid in full.
All students are required to maintain an average academic standing of 70% or better. Students must pass both theory and practical components of the course. Internship assessment will be completed by the host placement. A diploma is granted when all course work is successfully completed.
