Program Description

The Pharmacy Technician program at the KLC College: Healthcare, Business, Education is a 49 week diploma program registered by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities. It provides students with comprehensive technical and practical based experience and strives to meet the requirements set by NAPRA (National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities),CPTEA (Canadian Pharmacy Technician Educators Association) and the Ontario College of Pharmacists. The Pharmacy Technician program of KLC has been awarded the status of Provisional Accreditation by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs for a three year term 2010-2013.

Graduates of the KLC program will be prepared to work in retail, hospital and long-term care settings upon completion of the program. Some of the responsibilities include preparing and compounding prescriptions under the supervision of a Pharmacist.

Following the program, the graduate may pursue the PEBC (Pharmacy Examination Board of Canada) evaluation exam and the process of registration to become regulated as a Pharmacy Technician.

Academic Course Grading

 Students must achieve a 75% over all to pass the program. Core courses such as computerized prescriptions, math, compounding and law require a 75% minimum grade to pass.

Work Placements

 Students will complete two unpaid four-week internships under the supervision of a pharmacist/technician after the completion of semester three: one in a retail/community pharmacy and one in a hospital/long term institution pharmacy setting. Students, with faculty guidance, decide on a community placement. The program co-coordinator along with the guidance of the advisory committee arranges the hospital pharmacy placement. Students are evaluated during placement on a pass/fail basis.
Admission Requirements for Pharmacy Technician Program
Ontario Secondary Diploma (grade 12) or G.E.D is needed along with demonstrated English proficiency, communication and comprehension skills diploma with advanced credits in Math, Science and English with a final mark of 60% in pure or applied.  Key boarding skills 35 wpm upon entry and an interview with Academic Program Coordinator may be required.

Prior learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
Students may have acquired learning through work experience, study and experiential learning. Students will be required to demonstrate their achievement of course learning outcomes. Credit in individual Pharmacy Technician courses will be granted only for demonstrated ability in similar accredited CCAPP Pharmacy Technician academic subject areas that have a pass standing. Students will be granted PLAR with a combination of work and education experience. They must however achieve a score of 75% in the challenge exam. Students must still complete a minimum of fifty percent of the program to receive our diploma. Students may obtain a course outline from the academic area responsible for delivering the course to determine if their knowledge and skills match the course learning outcomes.

Applying for Transfer Credit
Students applying to KLC College: Healthcare, Business, Education Pharmacy Technician program may have already completed another similar CCAPP accredited program with similar courses. Students will only be granted advance standing if the academic courses they have previously taken are Pharmacy Technician accredited courses and have obtained a passing grade of 75% in core courses. All supporting transcripts and detailed course outlines (course descriptions in calendars are not sufficient) must be included with transfer credit application. Advance standing for prior completed placement is not transferable. Student must still complete a minimum of fifty percent of the program to receive our diploma.
English Language Proficiency Requirement

Applicants whose first language is NOT English must demonstrate ONE of the following
  • Achievement of valid TOEFL score 557-560 on the paper based test. A score of 220 on computer based test or a score of 83 on the internet based test (iBT)
  • Achieving a valid IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.5
