Program Description
Web designer is truly a broad job title that can be applied to the several careers involved in creating and maintaining web sites but can also contribute to web support careers like SEO, e-marketing, developing web content, hosting providers. The Web Design and Programming Diploma at the Kingston Learning Centre, registered by the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities, is a forty week program that entails one thousand hours in instruction and experience in the development of website design, web development, and implementation. The program is directed toward individuals seeking a new skill sets in the workplace. We provide one to one instruction in design layout, color theory, visual communication theory and typography; as well as instruction in industry standard software and current programming languages.  The diploma is partially self-facilitating including twenty five hours of self-paced learning  per week through a variety of methods including lectures, tutorials, reading assignments, research assignments, projects and tests.
 
Emphasis is placed on the development of seven websites that become part of an exit portfolio. Students explore many types of website design: informational, educational, cultural, e-commerce/persuasive site, web redesign, and e-portfolio. The capstone website is the culmination of the diploma. Students work with a client or clients using their acquired knowledge and skills to develop a functional, attractive and memorable website. Students can also elect to intern with a local business or design firm.

  • Instruction in industry standard software CS4, Photoshop, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Illustrator and Flash
  • Content writing to the web
  • Interface design & usable principles
  • Edit and create XHTML/CSS based web sites
  • Create complex graphics for the web
  • Upload and edit websites on a server
  • Become competent using Flash and Actionscripting 3.0
  • Become familiar with dynamic site development and database design using PHP and MySQL
  • Understand Content Management Systems(CMS) and Search Engine Optimization(SEO)
  • Dreamweaver CS4, FlashCS4, Illustrator CS4, Adobe Connect Pro

Cecily Moon, Programme Coordinator
Web Design and Programming Diploma
Cecily hold a BFA in Visual Arts, and a MFA in Digital Media. From 1995 to the present she has taught digital media, web design and the graphic arts at twelve institutions of higher learning in Canada and the United States. Currently she teaches as part of the Faculty of Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design, as well as the Kingston Learning Centre. She has proficiency in current industry standard software for page layout, illustration, web design and animation, and regularily updates her skills by participating in continuing education classes and using software in creative projects. In her design company, cecilymoonDesign she specializes in website and identity design.
Admission Requirements

Grade 12 or equivalent is needed with demonstrated English proficiency, communication and comprehension skills. Students must have the equivalent standing at the general level in English.

As a Graduate of the Web and Graphic Design Program....
  • Designing, implementing and maintaining web sites , working as web support by providing SEO,(ways of positioning  businesses in a google search) e-marketing, developing web content and hosting providers. You may work with graphic designers, translating print content into the web medium and introduce new marketing trends such a social networking systems to business and service industries.
